Employer:  WEST Consultants, Inc.

Job Location: Tempe, AZ

Title: Water Resources Engineer – Data Analysis & Visualization

Duties:  Develop novel customized scripts and tools to perform water resources engineering analyses related to hydrologic, hydraulic, and sediment studies.  Perform advanced data analysis and visualization for hydrologic, hydraulic, and sediment studies using Python, Mayavi, Jython, VBA, SQL and MATLAB.  Develop RiskRAS – an in-house digital tool for water resources engineering with a sophisticated graphical user interface; use RiskRAS for completing risk analyses (i.e., Monte Carlo simulations) to understand reservoir or other riverine structure water events using hydraulic models.  Manipulate Geographic Information System (GIS) data (including terrain, river cross-sections, land use types, etc.) using open source civil engineering programs and libraries such as QGIS, Python, GDAL, Fiona, Shapely, Rasterio, GeoPandas, etc.; use this data to perform water resources engineering analyses.  Develop web-based water resources engineering applications using PHP, jquery, Javascript or Python for real time communication of hydrologic data with rainfall and water flow gages or database servers. Develop water resources engineering algorithms that compute cumulative quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF) from the National Weather Service (NWS) and that periodically warn authorities when the forecasted rainfall is expected to exceed selected partial duration series (PDS) thresholds.  Modify the source code of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling tools (e.g., USGS MODFLOW/SWR) using FORTRAN, C/C++, and Python to add custom features or improve computational performance for analyzing hydrologic and hydraulic data as necessary for a water resources project.  Create hydrologic, hydraulic (1D and 2D), sediment transport models and then perform engineering analyses using these models.  Write reports describing engineering model development as well as engineering analyses and conclusions.  Participate in the creation or review of office proposals, project schedules, budgets, and project milestones for water resources engineering projects.  Coordinate and communicate with clients regarding same.  Attend project meetings and present communication pertaining to specific assignments or meetings.  Present work at civil engineering conferences.  Position requires approximately 1 week of domestic travel per year.

Requirements: Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, and 4 years of experience as a Civil Engineer or related occupation, and eligibility for an Arizona Professional Engineer license. University coursework must include: Sedimentation or Sediment Transport, Numerical Modeling, and Advanced Hydraulics. Experience must include:

  • 4 years of experience in working with sediment transport projects.
  • 4 years of experience in data analysis in the application of hydrologic, hydraulic, and sediment transport models.
  • 4 years of experience in working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) focused on water resources engineering, using tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Python, GDAL, Fiona, Shapely, Rasterio, GeoPandas.
  • 4 years of experience in working with the following civil engineering tools : HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HEC-ResSim, and HEC-6/6T. 4 years of scripting experience focused on water resources engineering, reservoir operations, and sediment transport, using Python, Mayavi, Jython, VBA, SQL, MATLAB FORTRAN, and C/C++.

All education, training, and experience may be gained concurrently.  Applicants must be U.S. workers (includes U.S. citizens, permanent residents, foreign nationals granted temporary residence under one of the 1986 legalization programs, refugees, and asylees).   Please email your resume to hrm@westconsultants.com with the job title as the subject line.
